Are you ‘oversharing’ on Social Media?

Tuesday, August 6th, 2024

Personally, I am surprised when friends of mine share details of their holidays while they are still away. This is one of the behaviours that the attached leaflet cautions against.

On the one hand, it’s nice to share with people – what are you doing, how are you feeling, what do you think, what are your opinions, likes, dislikes, passions and interests? As well as information and updates about yourself, family and friends, keeping everyone up to date about your life.

But what if what you share doesn’t have the effect you intended it to because it’s oversharing? Like your home being burgled because you posted your family holiday pics. Or your identity being stolen if a criminal pieces together the personal details in your profile. Further down is the content of a leaflet from getsafeonline.org, providing tips and advice on guarding against oversharing online.

First, though here is a video that should be thought provoking, about how an image shared quite innocently of a child can have far reaching ramifications.

You can download a PDF of the leaflet here. For further information, visit www.getsafeonline.org and search ‘Oversharing’.
